Exploring Christchurch Monday 11 March
Jane and Liz were born in Christchurch so this bit of the trip has special family interest.
Christchurch has been transformed after devastating earthquakes in 2010/11 with most of the 19th century stone/brick buildings either destroyed or awaiting repair. The future of the cathedral is controversial and this is holding up the redevelopment of cathedral square, this used to be the hub of the city. We were told by our tram driver that it will now be rebuilt as per the original design but that it will take years.
There are a few great new buildings up and running...we took the photo of Cathedral Square from the top floor of the impressive new library. This also captures a tram - we spent most of today `hopping on and off'.
Christchurch botanical gardens
What has n't changed is the botanical gardens, Hagley Park and the River Avon. It reminded us a little of Harrogate.
You don't get roses like this in England!!
Lovely to see views of Christchurch, I am almost there! Xx mum dee
