Oamaru March 7
We're now heading north, up the east coast. We had an overnight stay at Omaru. Its claim to fame is the Victorian precinct. In a period of less than 10 years a number of rather grand limestone buildings were built when the town was in a boom period. They're now the centre of a thriving tourist industry with lots of quirky shops and trades (book binding?). There's festivals and events where folk dress up in victorian gear. Its's also the HQ of steam punk...(not sure how to describe this so do an internet search if interested!)

Penguins are another attraction. They live near the harbour and can be seen each evening. We decided to go for a fish and chip supper and not stay around due to a strong wind, rain and a big temperature drop. Blue cod cod in beer batter and really crisp chips - wonderful!
Not many folk around for very good reason.
