Stewart Island - day 1

Enjoyable, lively crossing by catamaran to Stewart Island....a 1hr trip from Bluff and the most southerly point in NZ.

Stewart Island has wonderful scenery and is fairly untouched by tourism.

We walked to Ackers Point...a coastal walk, lots of ups and downs, bush paths and across a beach.   We were looking to `tick off' the local birds...managed a tui, oyster catcher and mutton bird (a brown \NZ seagull...and yes, they were a food source for maoris...but still on some menus apparently).
